What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a cosmetic alternative to traditional braces that work to shift teeth into their ideal alignment without noticeable brackets and wires. Instead, the Invisalign system uses a series of clear alignment trays to shift teeth, allowing patients to get their desired results without the hassles of traditional braces.
How Does Invisalign Orthodontics Work?
To move teeth into a new position, consistent pressure is needed. Traditional braces use wires and brackets to shift teeth. Invisalign trays are crafted to represent the smile one step closer to the desired end result. When patients wear the aligners, pressure is placed on teeth shifting them into this new placement. In most cases, patients need to wear the aligners for about two weeks to achieve this new positioning. Then, they can exchange their current set of aligners for the next set in the series. The entire treatment process is typically completed in about twelve months.
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?
The average treatment time is twelve months, but depending on your unique needs, treatment can take eight to eighteen months. Throughout your treatment, you’ll need to visit us about every two months in order to ensure your smile is shifting into its new position according to plan. Compared with bracket and wire braces, patients save significant overall treatment time and throughout the course of Invisalign.
Do I Need to Use a Retainer?
Even with clear aligner treatment, you’ll still need to use retainers. After your teeth are shifted into their new position, the roots of the tooth need to reconnect with the supportive jawbone and gum tissue. This takes time. In order to keep teeth aligned during this reconnection, you’ll need to wear a retainer. We can usually offer a clear retainer that will look just like your Invisalign trays.
How Much Does Invisalign Cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends in large part on your individual needs. Patients who need more sets of alignment trays will obviously have an increase in cost. Before we begin your treatment, one of our knowledgeable team members will walk you through the costs of every step of your Invisalign process. In many cases, dental insurance now provides the same coverage for Invisalign orthodontics that is offered for traditional braces. Most patients will not pay much more for Invisalign than they would for traditional orthodontic treatment.
