How Do Teeth Become Stained in the First Place?
Dental discoloration can occur for a number of reasons, such as a side effect of certain medical conditions, bad oral habits, or even through the natural process of aging. If you notice stubborn yellow or brown stains on your teeth, it could be the result of:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Smoking or chewing tobacco
- Consuming foods and drinks that are high in tannins or rich in color, like red wine
- Taking certain medications, such as the antibiotic tetracycline
Some stains that develop on the surface of the teeth can be removed through regular cleanings or by using a whitening toothpaste. But for tougher stains caused by the issues listed above, professional teeth whitening may be necessary to give you a truly bright smile.
How Does In-House Teeth Whitening Work?
Whitening your smile with our in-office Zoom! system is a quick and easy process that can usually be completed in an hour or less. First, we place a barrier over your gums and other oral tissues to protect them from the bleaching gel. Once we apply the gel to the teeth, we let it work its magic for a few minutes, breaking up the staining molecules on your teeth so that they can be easily wiped off along with the gel. We can wipe off and re-apply the gel a few times until you are satisfied with the color of your smile. After this process is over, you can leave our practice with a new and improved smile that’s up to ten shades brighter!
Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening
Many of our patients turn to our teeth whitening treatment only after they have tried and failed to brighten their smile with over-the-counter whitening products. These kits, gels, and strips promise fast and effective results, but that is rarely the case. In fact, many of these store-bought products contain abrasive chemicals that erode your enamel and cause sensitivity. Some of the benefits you can expect to gain from choosing a professional whitening treatment instead include:
- Fast, guaranteed results
- Results that typically last longer
- The use of ingredients that have been tested and deemed safe
- Little to no tooth sensitivity following treatment
- The ability to remove even the most stubborn stains
